Shahar Choir (Choir)

Founded: 1994 - Rehovot, Israel

Shahar Choir was founded in 1994 by Gila Brill, the choir's conductor and music director ever since. The choir admits young singers only, generally between 18 to 35 years of age. The singers expand their vocal and musical training within the choir as well as outside it, thus creating the clear, fresh sound which characterizes Shahar. The choir meets in Rehovot, although its singers come from all over the center of Israel.

Tough Shahar Choir's repertoire is wide and varied, the choir particularly specializes in Baroque shahar museummusic, which suits light voices and requires substantial familiarity with the genre. In addition, The choir enjoys performing classical and popular modern music as well. In its concerts, Shahar performs a cappella as well as in co-operation with a variety of ensembles and orchestras, such as the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Ramat Gan Symphony Orchestra, Ra'anana Symphonette String Orchestra, Pheonix Ensemble Galathea quartet. The choir has performed upon the best of Israel's venues for vocal music, such as the Abu-Gosh Music Festival, Dormition Abbey, Jerusalem Theater, Mormon University, Stricker Conservatory, Tzavta and Felicia Blumenthal Music Center.

Shahar Choir operates via the Rehovot Culture Fund and is supported by the Rehovot Municipality and the Music Department of the Culture Administration at the Ministry of Science, Culture & Sport.

"This choir's style of singing… is of the kind commonly described here as 'embodying a deep-rooted culture of singing'. This is the greatest achievement of Gila Brill, the choir's founder and coach. The sopranos and altos sound soft and clear, and the men produce supple voices…" - Haggai Hitron, Haaretz
