Luigi Marzola (Conductor, Organ)

Born: December 19, 1961 - Ferrara, Italy

The Italian conductor and organist, Luigi Marzola, graduated from the Conservatorio G. Verdi in Milan in Organ and Organ Composition, Piano, and in Choral Conducting at the Civica Scuola di Musica of Milan. He subsequently attended training courses in Choral Conducting with Peter Erdei and Mark Brown, specializied with Norbert Balatsch at the Accademia S. Cecilia of Rome. He studied singing with Margaret Hayward and chamber vocal repertoire with Dalton Baldwin.

As organist, harpsichordist, pianist and choir director, Luigi Marzola has collaborated with various artists including M. Ovadia, Peter Stein, Diego Fasolis, G. Sollima, A. Annecchino, F. Crivelli, Teresa Berganza, F Ogéas, M. Hayward, at the invitation of Italian and foreign concert organizations (Switzerland, USA, China, Slovenia, Greece, Spain, Belgium, Germany).

As a choral conductor, Luigi Marzola's notable collaborations include those with director Peter Stein for the theatrical productions of Heinrich von Kleist Penthesilea and Euripides Medea (in the Greek theatres of Urbisaglia, Siracusa, Epidauro, Merida, Karnuntum and on tours of the greatest theatres in Italy and Europe), and those with Radio della Svizzera Italiana (Swiss-Italian Radio). He collaborated for many years with the Lugano Musikhochschule as choir director (1995-2010) and from he was director of the Gruppo Vocale Cantemus of Lugano (1996 to 2013). In 1998 he formed the duo Calycanthus with soprano Dan Shen.

Luigi Marzola is regularly invited to sit on the jury panel of competitions and called to lead master-classes for singers and actors on vocalism and on operatic and song repertoire by a number of organizations. Since 2003-2004, he has been teaching at the Scuola Superiore per Direttori di Coro of the Guido d’Arezzo Foundation (2005-2019). He is full Professor in Collaborative Piano at the Conservatorio G. Verdi in (Milan (since November 2015) and Conductor of Youth Italian Choir of Feniarco (National Federation of the Regional Choral Associations). He chairs the l’Associazione per l’abolizione del solfeggio parlato, which promotes reflection on the AFAM sector and is a founding member of the Associazione Arione (2011), which promotes cultural activities. He currently lives in Rome, Italy.
