EKG:
Author: Georg Mylius (1639)
Chorale Melody: Lob sei dir, gütiger Gott (Zahn 4840) | Composer: Anon (Bohemian Brethren,1566)
Theme: Death & Dying

Description:

“Herr, ich denk an jene Zeit” (Lord, I think of that time) is a seven 7-line stanza hymn in BAR form with a text of Georg Mylius (1548-1607), published in 1640, and the melody “Lob sei dir, gütiger Gott,” a Death Song of Petrus Herbert in the Bohemian Brethren Songbuch (1566, Zahn 4840). Three stanzas are found in the Anthology of Christian Gesanche by Rambach (1720). J.S. Bach set the hymn as a plain-chorale, BWV 329 (http://www.bach-chorales.com/BWV0329.htm, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=napHQKsIt80).

German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1. Herr, ich denk an jene Zeit,
Wenn ich diesem kurzen Leben
Wegen meiner Sterblichkeit
Gute Nacht soll geben,
Wenn ich wird auf dein Gebot
Durch den Tod
Alles überstreben.

1. Lord, at all times doth my soul,
On this mortal life reflecting,
Mid the hours that graveward roll,
Think on death's swift coming;
When the summons dread must call,
And a pall
Cover all man's doing.

2. Was für Höllen-Angst und Qual,
Was für Furcht und großes Schrecken,
Leid und Trauren ohne Zahl
Wird sich da erwecken.
Satan, du wirst immer zu
Ohne Ruh'
Meine Sünd aufdecken.

3. Mein gebrochnes Augenlicht
Und die fast erstarrten Sinnen,
Mein verfallen Angesicht
Eilen dann von hinnen.
Alles wird mir abgerafft;
Geist und Kraft
Will mir gar zerrinnen.

4. Meine Füße werden Eis,
Bei den harten Herzens-Schlägen
Lass ich kalten Todes-Schweiß,
Alles will sich leben.
Meiner welken Zungen Band
Ist gespannt
Und kann sich nicht regen.

5. Dieser Leib und dies Gebein,
Ob ich noch so ängstlich zage,
Muss der Würmer Fraß doch sein
Über wenig Tage.
Alles ist der Schlagen Raub,
Asch und Staub,
Was ich in mir trage.

5. Comes the day when man's poor frame,
Silent to the tomb descending,
Food for worms i's given, his fame
Perished past all mending.
Satan's prey must he become,
Meet his doom,
None from it escaping.

6. Jesu, steh alsdann mir bei,
Lass mich Armen nicht verderben.
Mach mich aller Ängsten frei
Durch dein Blut und Sterben.
Tröste mich durch deinen Geist,
Der mich heißt
Gottes Kind und Erben.

6. Jesu, save my soul from loss,
In my anguish never leave me!
Save me by the Cross
That did once redeem me!
In Thy pity look on me
Lovingly!
God His son hath called me.

7. Hilf, dass ich dies Pilger-Land,
Dieses eitle tun mög hassen,
Und mir recht den Himmels-Stand
Im Gemüte fassen.
Dann will ich in Fried und Wonn
Hie davon
Und die Welt verlassen.

7. Help me turn my thoughts away
From this life wherein I journey,
And toward heaven's gates alway
Face me fair, serenely!
So shall I, above with Thee,
Joyfully
Know the joy awaits me.
