Mattijs van de Woerd (Baritone)

Born: 1973 - Rotterdam, the Netherlands

The Dutch baritone, Mattijs van de Woerd, began his musical studies as a member of the Rotterdam Boys’ Choir, continuing his training at the Rotterdam and Amsterdam Conservatoires with Sylvia Schlüter, Maarten Koningsberger and Margreet Honig. He participated in master-classes by Sir Thomas Allen, Barbara Bonney, Roger Vignoles and Rudolf Jansen. In 2001 Mattijs won the Vriendenkrans and Concertgebouw prizes; in 2003 he was awarded first prize at the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition in London.

Mattijs van de Woerd has worked with the Nederlandse Opera, Nationale Reisopera, Cappella Figuralis, Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, Holland Symfonia, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, Radio Kamer Orkest, Orchestra of the 18th Century and Nieuw Ensemble, with highly regarded conductors conductors such as Kenneth Montgomery, Paul McCreesh, Ed Spanjaard, Jos van Veldhoven, Péter Eötvös, Tan Dun and Frans Brüggen. His his stage experience has allowed him to work with directors Pierre Audi, Jeroen Lopes Cardozo, Alexander Olivier and Gerardjan Rjinders, amongst others.

Mattijs van de Woerd's engagements include performing Tan Dun's Tea with De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, Shanghai and Tokyo, touring the Netherlands singing Francis Poulenc’s La Bal Masque with the Ives Ensemble, Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem and Messe “Cum Jubilo” with The Gents, and Gassmann’s L’opera seria with De Nationale Reisopera. He has also sung Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Così fan Tutte at the Sage Gateshead, and Serviteur in Van Vlijmen’s Thyeste in the Netherlands and Brussels. In concert, he performed works as diverse as Heinrich SchützLukas-Passion, Igor Stravinsky’s Threni, Haydn’s Paukenmesse and Johannes Brahms's Deutsches Requiem. His operatic appearances include the title rôle in Don Giovanni and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte (W.A. Mozart), Lehrer in Der Jasager (Weill), Mr. Gobineau in The Medium (Menotti) , Sid in Albert Herring and Traveller in Curlew River (Benjamin Britten), Gendarme in Les Mamelles de Tirésias (Francis Poulenc) and Adario in Les Indes galantes (Rameau). Furthermore, Mattijs regularly appears in recital; in 2004 he made his recital début in the Concertgebouw alongside accompanist Graham Johnson.

Mattijs van de Woerd has participated in several radio and cd recordings, interpreting works ranging from Carissimi and Franz Liszt to Paul Hindemith and Henze.
