The Welsh-Indian violinist, Rakhi Singh, was born in south Wales to an Indian father and English mother. She first first picked up a violin at the age of 3. She attended Chetham’s School of Music and as a teenager won many national competitions, including the Audi Junior musician aged 14 after performing Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G minor with the London Philharmonic Orchestra live on Classic Fm, and the Texaco Young Musician of Wales 1997.
Since then Rakhi Singh has gone on to have a diverse career playing concertos, recitals, leading the Barbirolli quartet and guest leading many UK orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orpheus Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata and LCO.
Rakhi Singh is not just an accomplished violinist, she is also an explorative musician. She has been involved with a number of collaborations over the years. Namely as a solo violinist with the National Dance Company of Wales and Clod Ensemble. Throughout 2017 she performed with the internationally acclaimed Scottish Ensemble in their collaboration of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) with Swedish company Andersson Dance and is working with electronic musician/producer Vessel creating an electro-acoustic work based around Janacek’s string quartet - Intimate Letters.
Most recently Rakhi Singh appeared in recitals at the Swansea Festival in recital with accordionist Bartosz Glowacki, with Llyr Williams as part of Schubertiade at Rhosygilwen, west Wales and has been guest leading the PIatti and Edinburgh String Quartets.
Rakhi Singh is co-founder and Head of Artistic Planning for Manchester Collective - a new chamber collective comprising some of the finest of a new generation of international instrumentalists. The ensemble is dedicated to imaginative programming, free from restrictions; they present chamber masterpieces in new-fashioned settings, as well as cross-genre collaborations and commissions. |
