Maia Planas (Soprano)

Born: Palma de Mallorca, Spain

The Spanish soprano, Maia Planas, began her singing training at a young age through various choral groups in Palma de Mallorca (Coral infantil Escola de Música Mètode Ireneu Segarra, Coral Juvenil JJMM). She began her singing studies conducted by Marisa Roca. She continued her training with mezzo-soprano Sylvia Corbacho. She obtained the Professional Ssinger Title from the Conservatori de Música i Dansa de les Illes Balears. She studied higher singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Cologne, Germany with Canadian Professor Arthur Janzen. She has attended technical and interpretation courses with Carmen Bustamante, Dolores Aldea, García Morante, Kamal Khan, Joan Pons and Nicolás Giusti among others. She is currently studying with tenor Francisco Lázaro. She won the 3rd prize at the "Manuel Ausensi de Canto" Competition in Barcelona in June 2005. She was awarded the 1st prize in the competition for young performers Art Jove 99 of the Balearic Government.

Maia Planas is a former member of the Coral Universitat de les Illes Balears, directed by Joan Company, with whom she made her first interventions as a soloist. She took part in several opera productions of the Teatre Principal de Palma a, such as La Cenerentola, Tosca and Orfeo ed Euridice. She has performed several recitals in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia. Among her performances, Lobgesang by Felix Mendelssohn at the Auditorium de Palma de Mallorca, Magnificat (BWV 243) by J.S. Bach at the Palau de la Música Catalana de Barcelona, Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi at the Catedral de Palma de Mallorca, Missa Nelson by Haydn at the Auditori Josep Carreres de Vilasseca as well as the Messiah by George Frideric Handel in Saint André (France). She participated in the assembly of the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach, directed by Joan Antón Rechi who presented at the Teatre Romea de Barcelona. sHE has collaborated with the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears, Camerata “Sa Nostra”, Orquestra Nacional de Cambra d’Andorra,… She has worked under the direction of conductors such as Kamal Khan, Markus Bosch, Joan Company, F. Marina and F.P. Deker among others. She was a member of the vocal group of the Junge Kammeroper Köln in Germany during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Maia Planas has recorded a CD dedicated to the Mallorcan composer Joan Baptista Aulí, produced by the ACA Foundation. She currently plays the role of Gretel in the co-production of the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya for Engelbert Humperdinck's children's opera Hänsel and Gretel.
