Michael W. Moore (Conductor)

Born: Greenville, South Carolina, USA

The American conductor and music pedagogue, Michael W. Moore, obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education-Piano from Bob Jones University; his Master of Education in Music Education from Bob Jones University; his Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting from University of South Carolina - Columbia; and PhD in Music Education from University of South Carolina - Columbia. He has also completed additional study with Richard Grunow (of the Eastman School of Music) and holds certificates in Instrumental Music and Early Childhood Music Level 1 from the Gordon Institute of Music Learning.

Michael W. Moore is Professor and Head of the Department of Music Education at Bob Jones University (BJU).
He maintains a busy conducting schedule as director of the BJU Symphony Orchestra and director of BJU Faculty Chamber Winds, an ensemble he formed shortly after joining the faculty in 2005. In addition to his conducting duties, he supervises student teachers and teaches Introduction to Music Education, Instrumental Director Methods, Advanced Instrumental Conducting, Foundational Approaches in Music Education, and Graduate Seminar in Music Education.

Michael W. Moore brings a variety of teaching experiences to the classroom and podium, having taught instrumental music at Southwood Middle School and Westside High School in Anderson (SC) School District Five, Midlands Home School Band in Irmo, SC, and Bob Jones Academy. He founded the Greenville Textile Heritage Band in 2007 to preserve and celebrate the community’s rich tradition of mill village bands. A nominee for the Jean Laney Harris Folk Arts Heritage Award, Moore has led the band in scores of performances throughout the Carolinas and Georgia and has been awarded multiple Metropolitan Arts Council grants for his work with the band.

An active member of the National Association for Music Education, the Society for Music Teacher Education, and the South Carolina Music Educators Association for many years, Michael W. Moore has served as SCMEA Teacher Education Committee Chair, Higher Education Division President, and Teacher Evaluation Task Force Chair. In addition to presenting papers at various conferences sponsored by these organizations, he has taught Classroom Assessment in the Arts at the summer Arts Assessment Institute at USC–Columbia since 2007 and has served as clinician and adjudicator in various music festivals and camps throughout the US and in Germany and Switzerland. He and his wife, Dr. Deanna C. Moore, Professor of Piano at BJU, are proud parents of four budding musicians.
