Sergey Malov (Violin, Viola)

Born: June 18, 1983 - Leningrad, Soviet Union (now: St. Petersburg, Russia)

The Russian violinist and violist, Sergey Malov, was born in Leningrad (now Saint-Petersburg) in 1983. His father Oleg Malov is a pianist and professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. His mother Klara Lyudvigovna Malova is a music teacher. Malov's first teacher was Tatiana Liberova (Saint Petersburg). He is a viola graduate of the Mozarteum University Salzburg and the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin. Among his main teachers were Thomas Riebl, Antje Weithaas, Eberhard Feltz and Andreas Schreiber. Malov is a winner of international violinist and violist competitions. On the violin he won prizes at the Paganini Competition in Genoa, International Mozart Competition in Salzburg (2011), Jasha Heifetz Competition in Vilnius (2009) and the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand (2011). With the viola he won prizes at the ARD Competition in Munich and at the International Tokyo Viola Competition (2009).

Sergey Malov is considered as versatile as he is virtuoso: he plays violin, viola, Baroque violin and cello da spalla - the instrument on which J.S. Bach himself probably played his cello suites. His repertoire ranges from early Baroque music to J.S. Bach, from classical and romantic violin concertos to the world premieres of contemporary music. For his interpretations he deals intensively with questions of style and playing techniques of the respective epoch.

As a violin and viola soloist Sergey Malov has performed with orchestras such as the BBC London Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester, Saint Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Enesco Philharmonic Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Invitations from previous seasons have also taken him to the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he performed Sibelius‘ Violin Concerto on Sibelius‘ birthday under Klaus Mäkelä, to the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, to a Japan recital tour and a tour with the Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn. In summer 2019 he was residence artist at the Turku Music Festival in Finland

Sergey Malov was awarded the Baroque violin at the Leipzig Bach Competition. The „JumpstartJunior Foundation“ Amsterdam provided him with a Gioffredo Cappa Baroque violin. As a soloist he performed with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Venice Baroque Orchestra, Sevilla Baroque Orchestra, "Musica Viva" Orchestra Moscow, Camerata Salzburg and Baroque Orchestra Halle.

In the 2019-2020 season, Sergey Malove will make a series of brilliant debuts: at the Schubertiade Hohenems, the Festival Cervantino Mexico, Herkulessaal Munich and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, where he will present himself as soloist in two respects: with violin and violoncello da spalla. Once again he is on tour with the Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn, this time to Hong Kong, as soloist and conductor. Further invitations of the season lead him again to the Konzerthaus Berlin and to the Zaryadye-Halle in Moscow.

Sergey Malov’s recordings have been released by DECCA, EASonus, Hänssler Profil, Alba and Pan Classics. The latest album "Hommage á Ysaÿe" was released in September 2017 by Solo Musica. In spring 2019 he released his album "Paganini", on which he recorded its 24 caprices. The videos with his violoncello da Spalla have been viewed over a million times on the Internet. In addition to J.S. Bach's 6 Cello Suites (BWV 1007) Malov plays a wide repertoire of solo and chamber music on this instrument.

In September 2017 Segey Malov was appointed professor at the Zürich Musikhochschule. He speaks six languages: Russian, German, English, French, Spanish and Hungarian. He enjoys sports, plays soccer, practices martial arts.
