The Italian pianist, Monica Leone, began her piano studies under the guidance of her mother, Carmen Mazzarino, and then continued with Massimo Bertucci at the S. Pietro a Majella Conservatorium in Naples. Thus she is heir to the pianistic tradition of the school of Vincenzo Vitale, the most important teacher in Italy during the second half of the 20th century. She completed her studies with Michele Campanella at the Ravello School of Piano (where she has taught advanced courses since 1998), and at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena where she was awarded her Diploma d’Onore.
Monica Leone has performed in such prestigious concert halls as the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Verona’s Sala Maffeiana in the Teatro Filarmonico, the Sala G. Verdi at the Conservatorium of Milan; and at institutions like the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, the Friends of Music in Florence, the Settimana Musicale in Siena, Bocconi University in Milan, the Scarlatti Association in Naples, and the Micat in Vertice in Siena. In addition to Italy, she has performed elsewhere in Europe, as well as China and Australia (2004, 2006). Last year (2005) she made her debut in France, playing J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations (BWV 988). Other debuts are planned with the Orchestra della Toscana in Florence, and at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
Monica Leone's repertoire with orchestra includes all of the Bach concertos, as well as concertos by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Camille Saint-Saëns and Francis Poulenc. She also performs chamber music with a number of ensembles.
Monica Leone is recording the complete keyboard works of J.S. Bach, following a recording of the Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) with two volumes of the French Suites, released in 2004. |
