Keisuke Ikuma (Oboe, English Horn, Conductor)

Born: Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan

The Japanese-born oboist, English horn player, and conductor, Keisuke Ikuma, studied Law at Keio-Gijuku University (1983-1987). He studied oboe and received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music (1987-1990), where he was a full-scholarship student of Joseph Robinson, former principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied conducting with Constantine Kitsopoulos and David Gilbert.

Keisuke Ikuma has played as Guest Principal Oboe with New Japan Philharmonic in Sumida, Tokyo (1990-1995); Principal Oboe with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (September 1990-August 1991); Former Principal Oboe with New World Symphony (October 1991-July 1995); Principal Oboe with Colorado Music Festival (June-August 1993); Oboe/English Horn, Substitute with New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1996-2018); Principal Oboe with Hudson Valley Philharmonic (October 1999-October 2018); English Horn with Mariinsky Orchestra (October 2012, on their USA Tour); Oboe/English Horn, Assistant Conductor with The King and I the Musical (December 2014-June 2016); Oboe/English Horn with Orchestre National de France (January 2016, on their USA Tour); Oboe/English Horn with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (2016-2019); Oboe/English Horn/Assistant Conductor with Lincoln Center Theater (March 2018-July 2019); Oboe with Stamford Symphony Orchestra in Stamford, Connecticut (since September 2016). He is a highly sought-after oboe and English horn player in the New York metropolitan area, and also performs regularly with the, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke's, and numerous Broadway shows such as The King and I, Wicked, and Phantom of the Opera.

Keisuke Ikuma made his Broadway conducting debut in the 2015 Tony Award-winning production The King and I at Lincoln Center Theater. He recently served as interim Chorus Director of the Keio High School in Westchester. He is on the Woodwind Faculty at Bard College Conservatory of Music (since January 2019).
