Tomislav Fačini (Conductor)

Born: 1975, Zagreb, Croatia (former Yugoslavia)

The Croatian conductor, Tomislav [Tomislaf] Fačini [Facini], studied conducting at the Music Academy of Zagreb and was awarded the Rector's Prize upon graduation. He continued his studies at the Hans Swarowsky Academy in Milan and at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe and afterwards began lecturing at the Music Academy of Zagreb. Since 1994, he has been leading the Oratorio Choir of St Mark's Church, the Croatian foremost semi-professional choir. In 1996 he was awarded the second as well as the special prize at the Antonio Pedrotti Conductors' Competition in Trento.

Tomislav Fačini conducted two premieres at the Croatian National Theatre (HNK), La Traviata, marking the 100th anniversary of Verdi's death, and Puccini's Il Trittico. In 2002 he was the assistant conductor to Paul Esswood at the world premiere of Cavalli's opera Pompeo Magno at the Varaždin Baroque Evenings, where he previously conducted the premiere of Paisiello's The Barber of Seville. In 2006 he premiered Zrinjski by Ivan Zajc in Sarajevo Opera house, continuing this co-operation with the premiere of Carmen in May 2007 and Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in 2009.

Tomislav Fačini conducted the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Croatian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, Croatian Chamber Orchestra, Varaždin Chamber Orchestra, Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestras of Zagreb, Sarajevo and Rijeka, Haydn di Trento e Bolzano Orchestra, Baden-Baden Orchestra and Sinfonica Siciliana Orchestra. With the Slovenian Radio Television orchestra he recorded several hours of basic repertoire by Slovenian composers and some film music as well. He has also performed at every major Croatian festival and conducted the Opening of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

As a conductor with keen interest in vocal music, Tomislav Fačini leads and sings the bass part in the newly founded Antiphonus Ensemble, a vocal group with spicy and wide repertoire which starts its concert season this year.

In 2004 Tomislav Fačini joined the Croatian Army Orchestra as the chief conductor. In September 2005 he was appointed artistic director of the Musical Evenings in St Donat, giving a new swing to one of the oldest and most important Croatian Festivals.
