Marcel den Dulk (Choral Conductor)

Born: 1955 - The Netherlands

The Dutch choral conductor, Marcel den Dulk, studied choral conducting, church music and music education at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague (1975-1983). His teachers included Frans Moonen (choral conducting), Barend Schuurman (church music) and Lucas Vis (orchestral conducting).

Since 1975, Marcel den Dulk has worked as a pianist, organist and cantor, serving various ecclesiastical congregations. He is currently a church musician at the Protestant congregation in Hillegom. Since 2012, he is also Director of Cantorij Monnickendam. As a conductor of medium-sized to large oratorio choirs, he has performed many important choral works over the past 35 years, including J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor (BWV 232), Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248), W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Cherubini's Requiem, L.v. Beethoven's Messe Solemnelle, Puccini's Messa di Gloria as well as works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, John Rutter, Francis Poulenc and Maurice Duruflé. He made concert tours to Canada (Toronto and Ottawa), Luxembourg, Prague and Trier. He also performed as a conductor and organist for the Ikon radio and TV.

In addition to his conducting work, Marcel den Dulk composes and arranges songs, orchestral accompaniments and works for instrumental ensembles. He has also been working as a music consultant in education since 1985, a function aimed at improving music education in general and, in particular, vocal education for young people. As a teacher of voice formation and music theory, he teaches vocal technique for choir singers and he supports choirs as a vocal coach. He regularly gives lectures on larger choral works such as J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244). He revised J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) in Dutch and performed it in 2012 and 2014 with GrootNoord at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
