Aaron Dan (Flute)

Born: March 3, 1981 - Cluj Napoca, Romania

The Romanian flautist, composer and arranger, Aaron Dan, was born in Cluj Napoca, Romania, as the son of a Romanian organist and a Hungarian music teacher. He received there his first piano and flute lessons from the age of 9 and caused a sensation when he won three competitions at the age of 11 and played piano and flute concerts with the symphony orchestra. In 1994 he made his first solo concert tour in Germany (as a flautist and pianist). In 1992-1996 he won 1st Prize in six music competitions. After 8th grade, he moved to Budapest, Hungary, where he took flute lessons from Zoltán Gyöngyössy at at the Bartók-Conservatory in Budapest (1996-2000). This is where the Duo Dan brothers ensemble came into being, which (today as Trio Dan) played several hundred concerts across Europe, recorded three CD's and made many prizes, radio and television recordings. He studied at the Universität der Künste Berlin with Professor Annette von Stackelberg (2000-2006; diploma in 2006); at the Ecole Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris, with Professor Pierre-Yves Artaud, (2003-2005; diploma 2004, concert exam 2005); and, most recently, Postgraduate Flute Studies at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin with Professor Benoit Fromanger (2006-2007: artistic training).

Aaron Dan is in great demand as a soloist, chamber musician and presenter; He is a founding member of the Ensembles Berlin Counterpoint, with whom he appears in many important concert halls in Europe, has played solo concerts, among others. with the Philharmonie der Nationen, Preußischen Kammerorchester Prenzlau, Symphonieorchester des Oberbergischen Kreises, Camerata Belgrad and Orchestre des Flûtes Français. In 2004 he made his first 2004 USA Tour. In 2005 he won 1st Prize and three special prizes at the international flute competition “The Winner of Belgrade”, Serbia. In 2005-2006 he participated in the Artemis-Quartett master class in Berlin.

In addition to chamber music, his compositional oeuvre currently includes a number of choral works, a vocal symphonic work Im Anfang war das Wort (premiered in Berlin 2014), a children's opera Der kleine Prinz (The Little Prince) and several pieces for children's music theater as well as dozens of arrangements for his ensembles. In 2018 his alphabetical cycle was staged in three versions on B-A-C-H: as a septet (premiere on J.S. Bach's 333rd birthday in Berlin, Pianosalon Christophori), as flute and string orchestra (premiered October 3, 2018 in Ludwigsburg) and as a trio for flute and violin and piano. Aaron Dan lives as a freelance flautist and composer with his family in Berlin.
