Rupert Boyd (Guitar)

Born: Australia

The Australian guitarist, Rupert Boyd, holds a Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours) degree from the Australian National University School of Music, a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and an Artist Diploma degree from the Yale University School of Music. His major teachers have been Timothy Kain, David Leisner and Ben Verdery. Rupert Boyd has also performed in public masterclasses for Pepe Romero, Manuel Barrueco, Eliot Fisk, David Russell, Maximo Diego Pujol, Sharon Isbin, Remi Boucher and Pavel Steidl.

One of the most talented guitarists of his generation, Rupert Boyd has performed throughout the USA, Spain, Italy, France and Australia. He has performed at some of New York’s most prestigious classical music venues, including The 92nd Street Y, Bargemusic, The New York City Classical Guitar Society and The Monkey. In addition to winning the Andrés Segovia award from the Manhattan School of Music, Rupert Boyd was a winner of the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition and winner of the Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition, which resulted in a performance of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with orchestra, conducted by Lawrence Leighton Smith. In 2009 he has given performances with The New York Festival of Song and Moving Theater Dance Company, in addition to solo recitals for the Boston Guitar Society and the Omaha Guitar Carnival in Nebraska.

With a strong interest in chamber music, Rupert Boyd formed the Australian Guitar Duo with guitarist Jacob Cordover. An international concert tour in 2008 included performances at Festival de Musique Classique in France, Project Cancion Española in Granada and concerts in Barcelona and Australia. The Duo has performed at the New York City Guitar Duo festival, was a prize winner of the Chamber Music section of the Australian Guitar Competition and had a recital broadcast on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Classic FM ‘Young Australia Series’.

Rupert Boyd’s debut solo recording "Valses Poéticos" was released in June 2008. A review in the UK based magazine Classical Guitar, described the CD as follows: “The performances that Boyd gives here are first-rate . . . Altogether this is a fine CD from a player who deserves to be heard.” The CD has been frequently broadcast on Australia’s most regarded classical music station ABC Classic FM, as well radio stations throughout the USA.

Rupert Boyd currently resides in New York City. He is on faculty at the 92nd Street Y School of Music, The Greenwich House School of Music, The New York City Guitar School and Larchmont Music Academy.
