The Moldovan-born violinist, Joseph Bernstein, studied at the Vienna Academy with Rosé, and graduated with honors. Later he worked under the supervision of Carl Flesch and George Enescu.
Until 1937 Joseph Bernstein was heard in concert throughout Europe. Hae forged a successful orchestral career. In 1937, he he joined the newly-formed Palestine Philharmonic Orchestra (later to become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra) as first violinst and soloist, and subsequently founded the Tel-Aviv String Quartet. After World War II, he moved to America where he was the long-serving and admired assistant concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. In this country he also appeared widely as a soloist and in chamber music performances. |
