Bergedorfer Kammerchor (Chamber Choir)

Founded: 1946 - Bergedorf, Germany

The Bergedorfer Kammerchor (Bergedorf Chamber Choir) since its foundation in 1946 by Hellmut Wormsbächer holds a permanent place in the cultural life of Hamburg and Northern Germany. The 50 singers are dedicated to the sacred and secular choral literature of all eras.

The choir provides carefully selected pieces of an overall coherent approach, and suggests with each concert a large work. Oratorio works such as the Requiem by W.A. Mozart, Mass in B minor (BWV 232) by J.S. Bach, Die Schöpfung by J. Haydn belong to the repertoire of the choir.

This versatility and the high level of singing are maintained through regular rehearsals and at least two rehearsal weekends with voice building, as well as concert tours in Germany and abroad. The larger tours took the choir to gigs in Italy, Denmark, Hungary, Malta, Austria, Spain, France, England and Ireland. In addition, the choir regularly gives guest performances at the monastery churches of Marienmünster and Maria Laach.

Hellmut Wormsbächer, who conducted the Bergedorfer Kammerchor for 55 years, laid the foundation for the ambitious choral work with dedicated amateur singers. Numerous awards in competitions (e.g. International Choir Festival in Malta: 1st Prize, 1990, Chor-Oskar, Hamburg-Bergedorf: 1st Prize 2006) testify to the high artistic power of this ensemble. Wormsbächer's successor Tobias Brommann has was appointed in 2003 to Domkantor in Berlin. Since then, the artistic responsibility is in the hands of Frank Löhr, Professor of choral and orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover. In collaboration with Frank Löhr the Bergedorfer Kammerchor continues in a steady singing and artistic development, to present interesting and high-quality choral music making.
