Boris Berezovsky (Piano)

Born: January 4, 1969 - Moscow, Russia (former USSR)

The Russian pianist, Boris Vadimovich Berezovsky (Russian: Бори́с Вади́мович Березо́вский), studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Eliso Virsaladze and privately with Alexander Satz. Following his London debut at the Wigmore Hall in 1988, The Times described him as "an artist of exceptional promise, a player of dazzling virtuosity and formidable power." Two years later, in 1990, that promise was fulfilled when he won the Gold Medal at the 1990 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

In May 2005 Boris Vadimovich Berezovsky had his first solo recital in Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and played in the same venue in January 2006 with the Orchestre National de France. In January 2007 he played seven recitals "Carte Blanche" in the Louvre. In May 2009, he premiered Karol Beffa's Piano concerto in Toulouse, with Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and Tugan Sokhiev as conductor. He has initiated and organized the International Medtner Festival that took place 2006 and 2007 in Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Vladimir, as he has championed the composer since the early 1990's and has been one of the foremost recent interpreters of Medtner's music.

Boris Berezovsky has established a remarkable reputation, both as the most powerful of virtuoso pianists and as a musician of unique insight and sensitivity. He works regularly as concerto soloist with orchestras including the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Philharmonia Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Residentie Orkest Den Haag, Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper, Hessischer Rundfonk Sinfonieorchester Russian National Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and with conductors such as Kurt Masur, Charles Dutoit, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Alexander Lazarev, Andrew Litton, Mikhail Pletnev, Antonio Pappano etc.

In recital and as a chamber musician Boris Berezovsky performs regularly in recital series and festivals world-wide. His forthcoming performances include a return to the QEH International Piano Series, the Concertgebouw, La Roque d’Antheron, Ruhr Piano Festival, Les Folles Journées de Nantes, Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels, Megaron, Athens and Symphony Hall, Birmingham amongst others. He has a noted duo partnership with violinist Vadim Repin and Brigitte Engerer, and his piano trio performs throughout Europe at the highest level.

Boris Berezovsky's recordings of the complete L.v. Beethoven Piano concertos with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra with Thomas Dausgaard have been greeted with high critical acclaim. He has made a considerable number of records for Teldec, including solo discs of works by Frédéric Chopin, Robert Schumann, Sergei Rachmaninov, Mussorgsky, Balakirev, Medtner, Ravel and the complete Franz Liszt Transcendental Etudes. With the Mirare Label, he has recorded the S. Rachmaninov's Préludes (May 2005) as well as that composer's complete Piano Concertos with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dmitri Liss (August 2005). His album Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 and Khachaturian Piano Сoncerto (Ural Philharmonic Orchestra/Dmitry Liss) was released in April 2006 in the UK. The most recent recordings are Medtner Tales & Poems with Yana Ivanilova (soprano), Vassily Savenko (baritone) (Mirare 2008), Medtner Two pieces for two pianos, Op. 58, with Hamish Milne (piano) in: Medtner Complete Piano Sonatas; Piano Works - Vol. 7 (Brilliant Classics 2008), S. His recording of selected works by Johannes Brahms (Piano Concerto No. 2, Variations on a Theme of Paganini, and Hungarian Dances Nos. 1, 2 & 4) was released in January 2011 (Mirare). More recently, he released a recording of the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Tchaikovsky and other selected works (also with Mirare).
