German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1. Oh Mensch, schau Jesum Christum an,
den wahren Mensch und Gott,
der für uns hat genug getan
durch seinen bittern Tod.
O wie große Angst und Pein
durchdrang das Herze sein.

To be added

2. Am Kreuz stund er hoch ausgereckt,
und trug' ein Dornenkron,
hing im Fleisch blutig bloß und nackt,
voller Schmerzen, Spott und Hohn.
Aus der Seit' und Herzen sein,
floß Heil der Seelen mein.

3. Sein Mund sprach: Nun ist all's vollendt,
was Gott versöhnen kann,
der bußfertigen Sünder all',
nehm' ich mich feundlich an.
O herzliebster Vater mein,
laß Dein Volk dein Erbe sein.

4. Den Trost hört' ich aus Jesu Mund,
ins elend Herze mein,
reden in seiner letzten Stund,
tief in mein Seel' hinein.
O tu' dies, Herr Jesu Christ,
der du ja mein Heiland bist.

5. O Herr, dein Angst, dein Blut, dein Tod,
dein tröstlich Angesicht
laß du in meiner letzten Not
sein meine Zuversicht,
daß ich's danke deinem Namen
in Ewigkeit. Amen
