Keinen hat Gott verlassen
Text and Translation of Chorale

Ref. in hymnals/hymn books: NLGB 292; ELG 517
Author: Anon (Erfurt, 1611)
Chorale Melody: Keinen hat Gott verlassen (Zahn 5394) | Composer: Anon (Berlin, 1640), to "O Gott, ich thu dirs klagen", based on an anonymous melody 1609

Description:

"Keinen hat Gott verlassen". [Trust in God.] Wackernagel, v. p. 275, gives this hymn from the Geistliche Lieder (Erfurt, 1611), and the Christliches Gesangbuchlein (Hamburg, 1612), in 8 stanzas of 8 lines. Also in Mutzell, 1855, No. 590, and the Berlin Geistliche Lieder (ed. 1863), No. 847. In the 1612 it is entitled "A hymn on the name of the serene right honourable princess and lady, Lady Katharina, by birth and marriage Margravine and Electress of Brandenburg." As she died September 30, 1602, the hymn probably dates from the 16th century. The initials of the 8 stanzas form the name Katarina. The common ascription to Andreas Keßler, who was only born in 1595, is baseless.
The hymn was translated into Englsh as: (1) "Haste, Lord, within my worthless heart." A translation of stanza vi. by C. Kinchen, as No. 33 in the Moravian Hymn Book (1742). In 1789 and later editions (1886, No. 444, as Moravian Hymn Book, 1801 (1886, No. 719).

German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1. Keinen hat Gott verlassen,
Der ihm vertraut allzeit:
Ob ihn schon drum viel hassen,
So bringts ihm doch kein Leid.
Gott will die Seinen schützen,
Zu letzt erheben hoch
Und geben, was ihn nützet
Hie zeitlich und auch dort.

1. His own God ne'er neglecteth,
Who in Him put their trust,
He who his sin repenteth
He raiseth from the dust.
God will protect His children
And one day call them home,
On earth let nothing harm them,
But to their comfort come.

2. Allein ichs Gott heimstelle,
Er machs, wie es ihm gefällt
Zu Nutz meinr armen Seelen,
In dieser argen Welt
Ist doch nur Not und Leiden
Und muss auch also sein,
Denn die zeitliche Freuden
Bringt uns in ewig Pein.

3. Treulich will ich Gott bitten
Und nehmen zum Beistand
In allen meinen Nöten,
Ihm besser als mir bekannt.
Wie könnt er mich denn lassen,
Der treue Nothelfer mein,
Denn wenn mein leid am größten,
Will er gewiss bei mir sein.

4. Alles Unglück und Glücke
Das kömmet doch von Gott.
Ich weiche nicht zurücke,
Und fleh in meiner Not.
Um Geduld tu ich stets bitten
In allm Anliegen mein:
Er wird mich wohl behüten
Und mein Nothelfer sein.

4. Both good and ill He sendeth;
He chooseth which alone.
He foolish is that groaneth
Or troubled makes his moan.
How can God e'er reject me,
My Helper, truest, best?
No, when care rubs most sorely,
He'll give me quiet and rest.

5. Reichtum und alle Schätze,
Was sonst der Welt gefällt,
Dahin ich mein Sinn nicht setze
In dieser argen Welt:
Ein Schatz hab ich im Himmel,
Der heißet Jesus Christ,
Er ist über alle Schätze,
Schenkt uns sein Himmelreich.

6. Ich hab ihn eingeschlossen
In meines Herzens Schrein.
Sein Blut hat er vergossen
Für mich arms Würmelein,
Mich damit zu erlösen
Aus ewiger Angst und Pein:
Wie könnt auf dieser Erden
Doch größer Liebe sein?

6. Deep in my heart I shrine Him
Who gave His blood for me.
How deep His love inclined Him
To stoop to rescue me!
From hell and pain He saved me
By His most precious death.
For His so gracious bounty
I raise my grateful breath.

7. Nun sollt ich mich erzeigen
Dankbar für solche Gnad.
Ich geb mich Gott zu eigen
Mit allem, was ich hab.
Wie ers will weiter machen,
Sei ihm alls heim gestellt:
Ich befehl ihm all mein Sachen,
Er mach, wie's ihm gefällt.

8. Amen, nun will ich beschließen
Dies schlechte Liedelein.
Herr, durch dein Blutvergießen
Lass mich dein Erbe sein:
So hab ich alls auf Erden,
Was mich erfreuet schon;
Im Himmel soll mir werden
Die ewige Gnadenkron.

8. Amen. Now, Lord, is ended
This duteous song of mine.
Lord, by Thy love commended,
Make me all wholly Thine!
So shall I, here a mortal,
Enjoy Thy bounteous grace,
And one day pass heaven's portal
To my appointed place.
