Description:

German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1. Jesu, der du selbsten wohl
Hast den Tod geschmecket,
Hilf mir, wann ich sterben soll,
Wann der Tod mich schrecket.
Wenn mich mein Gewissen plagt
Und die Sünden nagen,
Wenn der Satan mich verklagt,
Lass mich nicht verzagen.

To be added

2. Jesu, zeige mir die Seit'
Und die roten Wunden
In dem letzten scharfen Streit
Meiner Todesstunden.
Lass mir deinen bittern Tod,
Blut und Angstschweiß nützen,
Wenn ich in der letzten Not
Vor dem Tod soll schwitzen.

3. Von dem Speer der letzte Stich
Geht dir zu dem Herzen;
Ach, Herr Jesu, denk an mich,
Fühlt mein Herz auch Schmerzen.
Blut und Wasser von dir fließt;
Lass mich dieses laben,
Wenn mein schwacher, matter Geist
Todes-Durst wird haben.

4. Jesu, meines Lebens Licht,
Dich nicht von mir wende.
Ach, Herr Jesu, lass mich nicht
An dem letzten Ende.
Jesu, reiße mich, mein Schutz,
Aus der Höllen Rachen.
Ach, ein Tröpflein deines Bluts
Kann mich selig machen.
