“Ich dank dir, Gott, für deine Wohltat” (I thank thee, God, for thy Good deeds) is a Morning hymn of theologian Johannes Freder (1510-1562)16 in three 9-line stanzas (1552), set to the associated Cyriakus Spangenberg melody (Zahn 8090a-b), published in the Christliches Gesangbüchlein (Eisleben 1568). It is found in the NLGB as No. 200 and Bach set it as a plain chorale, BWV 346 (http://www.bach-chorales.com/BWV0346.htm, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwBbJklaRSw).

Für all Wohltat,
Dass du auch mich hast gnädiglich
Die Nacht behüt't
Durch deine Güt,
Und bitt nun fort:
O Gott, mein Hort,
Für Sünd und G'fahr
Mich heut bewahr,
Dass mir kein Böses widerfahr! |
1. Accept, O Lord,
The praise outpoured,
For all the joy Thou'st given to me!
The night is o'er
Beneath Thy care;
And now I pray
That through the day
From sin and sleep
Thou safe wilt keep
And let no evil on me creep. |
