Bach & Other Composers

Johann Gottlieb Preller (Kantor, Composer, Organ, Copyist, Bach's Pupil?)

Born: March 9, 1727 - Oberroßla, near Apolda, Thuringia, Germany.
Died: March 21, 1786 - Dortmund, Germany

Johann Gottlieb Preller [Breller] was a German Kantor, composer, and land surveyor. He was born the son of Johann Christoph Preller in Oberroßla. He attended the school in Apolda?; from 1744 to 1750 he attened the Gymnasiums in Weimar, probably as a pupil of Johann Caspar Vogler (A-1). He may have been a pupil of Johann Nicolaus Mempel in Apolda, which is inferred from the common authorship of the Mempell-Preller-Handschrift, a manuscript collection of organ and keyboard works by J.S. Bach. He studied from 1750 at the University of Jena (enrolled on October 28, 1750). In 1753 or 1754 was appointed Kantor in Kantor at Archigymnasium and organist at the St. Marienkirche in Dortmund, where he founded a collegium musicum. He remained there for the rest of his life. His only known composition is a Laudate Dominum.

Johann Gottlieb Preller was probably a student of J.N. Mempel (C-19) in Apolda and may have taken over his J.S. Bach collection after his death in 1747. The Sammlung Mempel-Preller could have been expanded through sources from Weimar or the Johann Nicolaus Bach [27] circle in Jena. However, direct contact between J.G. Preller and J.S. Bach or even a student relationship, as implied by Löffler, cannot be assumed.
