Philipp Samuel Alt (Organ, Composer, Copyist)

Born: January 16, 1689 - Weimar, Thuringia, Germany
Died: June 27, 1765 - Weimar, Thuringia, Germany

Philipp Samue Alt was a German organist, copyist, and composer. He studied music with his father Kantor Wolfgang Christoph Alt (d Weimar 1715). c1700 with Johann Samuel Drese and Georg Christoph Strattner, studied piano and organ with Samuel Heintze, and in 1707 with Johann Gottfried Walther. In 1709 he studied law at the University of Jena. After his studies until his death, he was court lawyer in Weimar. In 1714 he performed as bass singer at the court at the time when J.S. Bach was concert-master. From 1721 until his death in 1765 he was organist of the Jakobskirche in Weimar.
