Laura Zahn (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: West Chester, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

The American mezzo-soprano, Laura Zahn, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Indiana University (2005-2010) while also completing a Bachelors of the Arts in International Studies (2008). While working towards her degree, she studied abroad in Vienna, where she trained with instructors at the Vienna Conservatory. She obtained her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from The Boston Conservatory (2015-2017).

Laura Zahn has been praised for her “warm, voluptuous voice clearly destined for Puccini and Verdi.” The 2018-2019 season saw her as La Frugola in Il Tabarro and La Zelatrice in Suor Angelica with Angels Vocal Art, Dorabella in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte with Light Opera of New Jersey, Marcellina in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro with Bel Cantanti Opera and Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors with Shakespeare Opera Theater. She was also seen as Flora Bervoix in La Traviata with Pacific Opera Project, a performance which Maria Nockin of Broadway World noted was sung “with powerful tones as a dramatic Flora whose line was always confident.” She is scheduled to perform The Secretary in Angels Vocal Art’s 2021 production of The Consul.

Highlights of her 2019-2020 season included a Carnegie debut singing selections of Amneris in Aida and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly as well as performing Maddalena in Rigoletto with Bel Cantanti Opera. In addition to these performances Laura Zahn was scheduled to sing the Mezzo-Soprano Soloist and Cat in a production premiere of Lori Laitman’s Vedem at Indianapolis Opera but it has since been postponed due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Other notable roles include Florence Pike in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring, Pepa in Goyescas, Siebel in Charles Gounod's Faust, Olga in Merry Widow and Mother Goose in Igor Stravinsky's The Rake’s Progress. She has also covered Mother in The Consul, Mistress Quickly in Falstaff, Minskwoman in Flight, The Moll in The Cradle will Rock and La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica.

In addition to these roles, Laura Zahn has been an Apprentice Artist with Opera Saratoga for two seasons, a Festival Artist at The Savannah Voice Festival and performed with The Boston Lyric Opera and Los Angeles Opera. In addition to these roles, She has performed with Center City Opera in Philadelphia and Indiana University’s Opera Theater. Outside of opera engagements, she is an active studio musician in voice and violin for various artists and producers.
