Fflur Wyn (Soprano)

Born: Carmarthen, Wales, UK

The Welsh soprano, Fflur Wyn, received a First Class Honours Degree from the Royal Academy of Music where she studied with Beatrice Unsworth and Clara Taylor. She graduated from the Royal Academy Opera Course with the prestigious DipRAM for outstanding performance and has subsequently been elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in recognition of her distinguished contribution to the music profession so far. She is the recipient of many awards and scholarships Including both first prize and Audience prize at the London Handel Singing Competition, the Kathleen Ferrier Bursary for Young Singers, the London Welsh Singer of the Year, the Bryn Terfel Scholarship and the MOCSA Young Welsh Singer Prize.

Having already gained wide acclaim for her performances on the operatic stage as well as the concert platform, Fftur Wyn has quickly established herself as one of the country's foremost sopranos. Her operatic performances include Jemmy in Guillaume Tell, Iphis in Jephtha, Blonde in W.A. Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Dorinda in George Frideric Handel's Orlando (Welsh National Opera); Pamina W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute, Alice in Alice in Wonderland, and the title role in Lakme (Opera Holland Park); Barbarina W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (La Monnaie); Governess in Benjamin Britten's Turn of the Screw (Mexico City); Celia in W.A. Mozart's Lucio Silla (Buxton Opera); Sophie in Werther, Marzelline in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio, Sevilla in W.A. Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito, Blue Fairy in Pinocchio, Watdvogel in Siegfried, Achsah in Joshua, Gretel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hensel and Greed, Flora in Turn of the Screw, Clerida in Croesus, Giannetta in L'elisir d'amore, Sophie in Der Rosenkavaller, Fire/Nightingale/Princess in L'enfant et les Sortileges and Trio Soprano in Leonard Bernstein's Trouble In Tahiti (Opera North); Florian in Leoncavallo's Zazà (Opera Rara); Mimi In Offenbach's Vert Vert (Garsington Opera); Michal in Saul with the BBC Singers; and Celidora L'oca del Cairo with the London Mozart Players.

Fflur Wyn is in demand as a singer of contemporary music and has created many roles, including Blonde Woman In Oscar Bianchi's Thanks to my Eyes (Aix en Provence Festival, La Monnaie, Paris, Lisbon); Girl in How the Whale Became by Julian Phhilip (Royal Opera House); Daughter in Elena Langer's The Lion's Face (The Opera Group, ROH); Adele in Jane Eyre by Michael Berkeley (Music Theatre Wales); the title role in Will Todd's opera Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for Opera Holland Park; and La Plus Jeune Fille in Philippe Boesmans' new opera Au Monde at La Monnaie.

Fflur Wyn has worked with many great conductors, including Sir Colin Davis, Sir Charles Mackerras, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Richard Armstrong, Harry Bicket and Paul McCreesh, and some of her most notable concert performances include the title role in G.F. Handel's Theodora (RIAS-Kammerchor); J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) (Combattimento Consort Amsterdam/Jan Willem de Vriend & the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra); G.F. Handel's Jephtha (Cappella Amsterdam/Daniel Reuss); Haydn's Harmoniemesse, W.A. Mozart's Mass in C minor and G.F. Handel's Messiah (Royal Northern Sinfonia/Thomas Zehetmair); Haydn's Creation (Gabrieli Consort/Paul McCreesh); G.F. Handel's Messiah (The English Concert/Harry Bicket); W.A. Mozart's Exsultate Jubilate (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and The European Union Chamber Orchestra); W.A. Mozart's Mass in C minor (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra); Francis Poulenc's Gloria (London Philharmonic Orchestra/David Parry); Orff's Carmine Burana (The Chamber Orchestra of Wales); J.S. Bach's Coffee Cantata (BWV 211) (Early Opera Group/Christian Curnyn); Acis and Galatea (La Nuova Musica/David Bates); B. Britten's Les Illuminations (Northern Chamber Orchestra); and W.A. Mozart's Concert Arias with the Aurora Orchestra at Kings Place, London. She made her Proms debut in W.A. Mozart's Thamos with John Lubbock and the Orchestra of St John's and her most recent recitals include performances at Kings Place, St John's Smith Square, Wilton's Music Hall, The Howard Assembly Room and the Oxford Lieder Festival.

Recent and future performances include the roles of Lucia in B. Britten's Rape of Lucretia with the Potsdamer Winteroper, Marzelline in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio, Susanna in W.A. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Morgana in G.F. Handel's Alcina for Opera North; the title role in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, for Welsh National Opera; Malinka in The Adventures of Mr Broucek with Grange Park Opera; Vivetta in L'ariesiana for Opera Holland Park; Esitena in G.F. Handel's Rodrigo with the Gottingen International Handel Festival; G.F. Handel Ode for St Cecilia's Day with The English Concert under Harry Bicket; J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass (BWV 232) with the Royal Northern Sinfonia; Orff's Carmine Burana with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the RSNQ and J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the Dunedin Consort. She currently lives in London, England.
