Alex Roose (Bass-Baritone)

Born: Australia

The Australian bass-baritone, Alex Roose, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in European Studies from The Australian National University (1996-2000). While studying there he was introduced to J.S. Bach's cantatas and was a founding member of the Canberra Bach Ensemble.

Alex Roose has been freelance bass-baritone since September 2009). After his studies, he spent ten years in the UK, where he enjoyed a varied performance career including over 100 concerts at St Martin-in-the Fields, regular broadcasts on BBC radio and television, and gave recitals throughout the UK and continental Europe. He has also made recordings for Chandos, Hyperion, Delphian, and Signum records. He was the bass soloist appearing alongside Dame Emma Kirkby and James Bowman for the 2012 Brighton Fringe and sang regularly with the Oxford Bach Ensemble and Philharmonia Voices. He has sung numerous cantatas and major works by J.S. Bach and other Baroque composers, and worked with leading conductors in this field, including Georg Christoph Biller (Thomaskantor, Leipzig), Stephen Layton, and David Hill. In the UK, he was also Bass Lay Clerk at Guildford Cathedral (September 2009-July 2014); and Music Director of New Sussex Singers (September 2014-May 2017).

In 2017 Alex Roose returned to Adelaide and since then has performed with State Opera of South Australia (since February 2018), Co-Opera, Adelaide Baroque, and Adelaide Chamber Singers (since April 2018). He is also Director of Music at Epiphany Church, Crafers (since July 2018), and conducts the Fleurieu Singers based in McLaren Vale. He has also been Music Director of Vocali Chamber Chorale (April 2018-February 2019); Chorus Master of Adelaide Concert Collective (March-April Apr 2019); Music Director of Voices in the Wilderness, Non-auditioned community choir based in Adelaide CBD (since January 2018); Chairman of RSCM South Australia (since February 2019).
