João Rodrigues (Tenor)

Born: Olivais, Lisbon, Portugal

The Portuguese tenor, João Rodrigues, studied singing at Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional (EMCN) with Filomena Amaro, at Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon (ESML) with Luís Madureira, Helena Pina Manique and Elsa Saque. He perfected with João Lourenço.

João Rodrigues was part of the casts of Porgy and Bess (Crabman);, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Apprentice), Parsifal (3rd Escudeiro) at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (TNSC); F. Martin's Le Vin Herbé at Teatro Aberto; Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio segreto (Paolino), W.A. Mozart's Cosi fanTutte (Ferrando) and W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (Tamino) at Fundação Gulbenkian; A. Keil's Suzana (Carlos) and E. Carrapatoso's A Floresta Professor de Música) at Teatro São Luiz; Leal Moreira's A Vingança da Cigana (Pierre) and B. Cavanna's Raphael, reviens! (Raphael) at Fundação Gulbenkian; Sergei Rachmaninov's Francesca da Rimini (Dante Alighieri) and R. Strauss' Salome (4th Jew) at TNSC; Offenbach's Bataclan (Kekikako), Vasco Mendonça's Jerusalém (Hinnerck) and Luis Tinoco's Paint Me (Lee) at Culturgest; Porgy and Bess (Sporting Life) at Centro Cultural de Belém; as well as W.A. Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne; George Frideric Handel's Ariodante (Odoardo) at Teatro Nacional São Carlos (2021) and Acis and Galatea; L'Arco di Sant'Anna, Tição Negro, D. Inês de Castro. He has performed sacred works by J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, Haydn, W.A. Mozart, Bruckner, Rossini and Monteverdi, among others.

As a soloist, João Rodrigues has collaborated with the main Portuguese orchestras and has sang in the world premieres of E. Carrapatoso's O meu Poemário Infantil (concert with direct transmission to the European Union of Radios), and Nuno Côrte-Real's Oratória Popular. He has performed in recital, at Teatro São Luiz, with pianist Nuno Vieira de Almeida, and in concert, at TNSC, with João Paulo Santos. He participated in the final concert of the 1st edition of Festival ao Largo, under the direction of maestro David Levi.

João Rodrigues has sung with various orchestras on the national scene, premiered works by E. Carrapatoso, N. Côrte-Real, V. Mendonça, L. Tinoco and performed concerts with pianists N.V.de Almeida, J.P. Santos, J. Crisóstomo, N. Lopes, F. Sassetti, J. Vasco, J.M. Brandão. He currently works at Teatro Nacional São Carlos in Lisbon.
