Jill Phillips (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: May 1988 - Decorah, Iowa, USA

The American mezzo-soprano and voices teacher, Jill Phillips, obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music summa cum laude from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa (2010). While at Luther College, she performed in the opera scenes program and the spring opera productions. She earned her Master of Music degree in voice from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (2012). While at CCM, she sang the roles of Marcellina in W.A. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (2011), the Old Prioress in Francis Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites (2011), and Baba the Turk in Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress (2012). In addition, she participated in the Opera Fusion: New Works project with CCM and Cincinnati Opera.

Jill Phillips has been an Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera (Summer 2012 & Summer 2013) and made her mainstage debut at DMMO in 2013 as the Zweite Mägd in the company's production of Elektra. She has sung with Kentucky Opera (2014), NANOWorks Opera (2013), Cincinnati Chamber Opera (2013), and Dayton Opera (2012). In addition, she has been a Studio Artist with Wolf Trap Opera (Summer 2011). She has sung scenes from such operas as Anna Bolena, Cendrillon, La cenerentola, The Crucible, Dead Man Walking, Don Carlo, George Frideric Handel's Giulio Cesare, L'italiana in Algeri, Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes, and Vanessa.

Jill Phillips performed as the alto soloist in the Peoria Bach Festival in 2017. In addition, she was the alto soloist in the Verdi Requiem with Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, in the fall of 2016. During the summer of 2015, she was a Young Artist at Opera Saratoga, where she covered the roles of Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Cenerentola in La cenerentola.

Jill Phillips received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (2020). In addition to her studies, she performed as an alto soloist with the Bach Ensemble of St. Thomas in Terrace Park, Ohio (2018). In the fall of 2017, she sang the alto solos in J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232 at Cincinnati's Christ Church Cathedral.

Jill Phillips is an adjunct instructor of voice at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa (since 2021), and at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin (since 2021). Additionally, she teaches remote voice lessons for the Wyoming Fine Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio (since 2017).
