Mônica Pedrosa (Soprano)

Born: Brazil

The Brazilian soprano, music pedagogue and researcher, Mônica Pedrosa de Pádua, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Singing from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1986); her Master of Music in Singing from the Manhattan School Of Music in New York (1989); and her PhD in Letters / Comparative Literature from the Faculdade de Letras da UFMG (2009).

Mônica Pedrosa is an associate professor at the Escola de Música da UFMG and Director of the 2014-2018 management institution. She works in the Musical Performance and Sonology research lines of the Graduate Program in Music. She is the coordinator of the Research Group Resgate da Canção Brasileira registered in the CNPq research directory in 2003. She develops the following research projects: "A canção brasileira de câmara" (The Brazilian Chamber Song) - location of scores, cataloguing, analysis, dissemination, editing of scores, sound recording; "Estudos da Canção de Câmara Brasileira para Canto e Violão" (Brazilian Chamber Song Studies for Singer and Guitar) - analysis, performance, transcription, sound recording, diction in Portuguese; "Sonologia" (Sonology) - study of voice as an acoustic material in its connection with musical productions and activities, studies on Brazilian Portuguese sung. She created, together with Brazilian researchers in the field of Singing, the Phonetic Table of Sung Brazilian Portuguese. In her PhD research she studied the interrelationships between music and poetry in Lorenzo Fernandes' chamber songs, when she developed theories on musical imagery based on the semiology of music. She participated in the commission in charge of preparing a proposal for the UFMG Culture Plan, in response to the call for the More Culture Notice at Universities, Minc and MEC. She was co-coordinator of the UFMG Culture Plan Project and member of the executive committee of the UFMG Culture Forum.

Mônica Pedrosa regularly performs as a singer in chamber music and orchestral concerts such as Johannes Brahms' Requiem, W.A. Mozart's Requiem and L.v. Beethoven's Missa Brevis.
