Elizabeth Paul (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Lichfield, England

The English mezzo-soprano, Elizabeth (Lissie) Paul, is a graduate of Royal Holloway, University of London (2010-2013), where she gained an honours degree in Music whilst specialising in solo performance. Alongside her studies, she sang as a choral scholar with the college’s highly acclaimed chapel choir (September 2010-July 2013), and also sang regularly as a soloist with Royal Holloway’s Early Music Society (2011-2013) and the college’s ‘Undergraduated’ Big Band (2011-2013).

Now based in London, Elisabeth Paul enjoys since September 2010 a busy career as a freelance soloist, choral singer and choir administrator (). She sings sings regularly in some of London’s well-known churches and performs with a number of ensembles including St Martin’s Voices, The Erebus Ensemble, The Portrait Choir, Sansara, Eboracum Baroque, the Choir of St Peter’s Church Eaton Square, The Echoris Ensemble, Lumina Voices, The Templar Scholars, Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short), and the National Youth Chamber Choir of Great Britain (since April 2010). She she is one 5th of the classical-crossover girl group Celeste. She is an alumna of the Genesis Sixteen choral training programme (August 2013-September 2014), which is generously supported by the Genesis Foundation and run by Harry Christophers and Eamonn Dougan, and she held a choral scholarship at St Martin-in-the-Fields for the academic year 2013-2014 (October 2013-June 2014).

Choral singing has taken her on tours of Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Malaysia, and the USA, as well as all over the UK, and she has sung for world renowned conductors at the BBC Proms including Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Simon Rattle, and Daniel Barenboim.

Solo repertoire includes: J.S. Bach’s Magnificat in D major BWV 243 (Eboracum Baroque, St Martin’s Voices), Cantata BWV 61 (Larkhill Choral Soc.), Cantata BWV 153 and Mein Seel’ erhbt den Herren BWV 10 (St Martin’s Voices); Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols (Royal Holloway Chapel Choir); Bruckner’s Requiem (Feltham Choral Soc.); Dvorak’s Mass in D (Royal Holloway Chorus); Gabriel Faurés Requiem (St Martin’s Voices); George Frideric Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum (St Martin’s Voices) and Messiah (Eboracum Baroque); Haydn’s ‘Nelson’ Mass and Mass in the Time of War (Southend Choral Soc.); Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah (Feltham Choral Soc.); W.A. Mozart's Requiem, ‘Coronation’ Mass (Larkhill Choral Soc.), Vesperae Solennelles de Confessore, and Litaniae Laurentanae K. 109 (St Martin’s Voices); Schubert’s Mass in C (Feltham Choral Soc.) and Mass in G; Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria (Ashford Baroque Ensemble, St Martin’s Voices); and William Walton’s The Twelve (St Martin’s Voices). Named roles include First Witch (St Martin’s Voices) and Sailor (Royal Holloway Early Music) in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Fairy in Purcell’s The Fairy Queen (Eboracum Baroque), and Gossip in B. Britten’s Noye’s Fludde (Westminster Cathedral).

She has had the opportunity to sing on several live radio and television broadcasts including BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Worship, BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and Choral Evensong, BBC One’s Songs of Praise, The Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance, and services at The Cenotaph and St Martin-in-the-Fields to commemorate the 70th Anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day. She has also recorded critically acclaimed discs for Hyperion Records, EMI Records Ltd., Delphian Records, and Convivium Records. She has been Choir Administrator at Holy Sepulchre London since September 2014. She is also Regular soloist at weddings, funerals, and corporate events.
