Jakub Józef Orliński (Counter-tenor)

Born: December 8, 1990 - Warsaw, Poland

The Polish counter-tenor, Jakub Józef Orliński, began his music career in the male choir Gregorianum led by Berenika Jozajtis, with which he performed both in the country and abroad. He is a graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, and since 2009 he studied in the class of singing under supervision of Anna Radziejewska. During his studies toward his Master’s degree in vocal performance, he participated in a number of performances organized by the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music and the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art. Since 2012, he he participated in the prestigious young artist program: Opera Academy at Polish National Opera in Warsaw. From 2015 to 2017 he studied at the Juilliard School of Music in Naew York with Edith Wiens, receiving his Graduate Diploma in 2017.

While in Poland, Jakub Józef Orliński performed the roles of Cupid in Venus & Adonis by Blow and Narciso in Agrippina by George Frideric Handel. While in Germany, he performed the role of Ruggiero in G.F. Handel’s Alcina in Aachen and Cottbus, performed select Purcell songs with ballet at the Leipzig Opera House, and Philippus in Georg Philipp Telemann’s Der Misslungene Braut-Wechsel oder Richardus I (based on G.F. Handel’s Riccardo Primo, Re d’Inghilterra) in Gießen.

Jakub Józef Orliński Orliński has triumphed in several vocal competitions: the 1st Place Winner at the Oratorio Society of New York’s 2016 Lyndon Woodside Oratorio-Solo Competition, the 1st and 2nd annual International Early Music Vocal Competitions in Poland, where he received “Special Mention” and “Special Prize,” respectively, first prize at Rudolf Petrák’s Singing Competition in Slovakia, 3rd place at the Debut Competition in Igersheim, Germany, Special Mention at the 8th Annual Mazovian Golden Voices Competition in Poland, and 3rd place at Le Grand Prix de l’Opera in Bucharest, Romania. He is Grand Finals winner of the 2016 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and winner of the 2015 Marcella Sembrich International Vocal Competition

Jakub Józef Orliński is quickly gaining a reputation as a singer of striking vocal beauty and daring stage craft. He has performed in Carnegie Hall as well as Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York and met with positive critical reviews from The New York Times.

The 2016-2017 season included performances of G.F. Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall with both Musica Oratorio Society of New York (December 2016), and for his debut with the Houston Symphony Orchestra (December 2016). Jakub Józef Orliński performed in Flight, Jonathan Dove’s modern-day comedy, with Juilliard Opera. He also sang the role of Ottone in G.F. Handel's Agrippina with Juilliard Opera in conjunction with Carnegie Hall’s La Serenissima: Music and Arts From the Venetian Republic festival. He took part in the Karlsruhe Handel Festival to sing Antonio Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus and excerpts from G.F. Handel’s Dixit Dominus. (February 2017). In addition, he made his debut with the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in Cavalli’s opera Erismena (June 2017), and appeared for the first time with Oper Frankfurt.

In the 2017-2018 season, Jakub Józef Orliński will make his house and role debut at Oper Frankfurt as the title character in G.F. Handel's Rinaldo. He will then join Festival d’Aix-en-Provence on tour to sing the role of Orimeno in Cavalli’s Erismena at the Château De Versailles and Festival de Saint-Denis. Concert appearances will include a tour of G.F. Handel's Rinaldo as Eustazio with The English Concert led by Harry Bicket, a performance of A. Vivaldi's music with Chicago’s Music of the Baroque, and G.F. Handel's Messiah with the Portland Baroque Orchestra. He will make his Wigmore Hall recital debut in the summer of 2018.

In his spare time, Jakub Józef Orliński enjoys breakdancing, in addition to other styles of dance. His achievements in this arena include prizes in many dance competitions: 4th place at the Red Bull BC One Poland Cypher competition, 2nd place on the Stylish Strike – Top Rock Contest and 2nd place at The Style Control competition, among others. He has also been featured in a commercial for the street wear company CROPP, as well as featured as a dancer, model and acrobat in campaigns for Levi’s, Nike, Turbokolor, Samsung, Mercedes-Benz, MAC Cosmetics, Danon and Algida.
