The Canadian mezzo-soprano and voice teacher, Jennifer Enns Modolo, has spent in her formulative years singing in school choirs, church choirs and the Inter Mennonite Children’s Choir. She graduated from Rockway Mennonite Collegiate; and obtained her Bachelor of Music defree in Vocal Performance with Honours from Wilfrid Laurier (1997-2001).
Jennifer Enns Modolo has been singing professionally and teaching privately since finishing her studies, and has made a name for herself in Canada and abroad. She has delighted audiences across with her clear, unaffected voice and meaningful singing. In 2005 she made her debut in England at the Snape Proms as part of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, and toured Spain and France with Consort Caritatis. She has sung regularly with numerous choirs and orchestras large and small throughout Ontario and across Canada, including the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Elmer Iseler Singers, Grand Philharmonic Choir, Kitchener-Waterloo Philharmonic Choir, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Elora Festival Singers, Toronto Classical Singers, Talisker Players, Richard Eaton Singers, Nota Bene Period Orchestra, Vancouver Bach Choir and at the Grand River Baroque Festival. As an accomplished concert soloist, her repertoire ranges from Renaissance to modern music, including J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel, W.A. Mozart, L.v. Beethoven and Ottorino Respighi. In addition, she has premiered and performed works of several Canadian composers including Bramwell Tovey, Imant Raminsch and Michael Purves-Smith. On the opera stage she has sung the title role in Rossini's La Cenerentola with the Orford Arts Centre, and a country maiden in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Ontario. Other roles include the Third Lady in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Jennie Hildebrand in Weill's Street Scene. She is a member of the Hamilton based ensemble Capella Intima, which specializes in performing exciting concerts of lesser known 17th century vocal and operatic music, as well as the Spiritus Ensemble (Director: Kenneth Hull). In addition to performing with large and small ensembles, she also delights in the art of the solo recital and collaborate frequently with lutenist Magdalena Tomsinska and pianist Lorin Shalanko.
Highlights from past seasons include singing the role of Sara in Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux with Opera in Concert, G.F. Handel's Messiah with the Elmer Iseler Singers under the baton of Sir David Willcocks, L.v. Beethoven’s Mass in C with Consort Caritatis on tour in Spain and France, and J.S. Bach's cantata BWV 182 Himmelskönig, sei wilkommen under the baton of counter-tenor Andreas Scholl as part of the Snape Proms and the Britten-Pears Young Artist Program in Aldeburgh, England. Engagements for the 2019-2020 season include a recital of early Italian music with lutenist Magdalena Tomsinska at Wilfrid Laurier University, G.F. Handel's Messiah with Redeemer University College, Spiritus Ensemble, and the Guelph Chamber Choir, a program of early Christmas music with Capella Intima, J.S. Bach's Cantata BWV 76, Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gotte with Spiritus Ensemble, the premiere of a new commission by Jeff Enns with DaCapo Chamber Choir, J.S. Bach's Cantata BWV 82 Ich habe genug and a newly commissioned work by Barbara Croall Zasakwaa (There is a Heavy Frost) with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) with Spiritus Ensemble, and “Sacrum and Profanum” with counter-tenor Daniel Cabena and lutenist Magdalena Tomsinska as part of the Nota Bene Baroque Players concert series.
Jennifer Enns Modolo is featured on several Aradia Ensemble recordings, including George Frideric Handel's Israel in Egypt (Naxos, 2008), Antonio Vivaldi: Sacred Music, Vol. 3 (Naxos, 2008) and singing the role of Eustazio in G.F. Handel's Rinaldo (Naxos, 2005), all under the baton of Kevin Mallon.
As a private voice teacher since 2001, Jennifer Enns Modolo has had the opportunity to work with singers with widely ranging abilities. She has also taught voice at at Redeemer University College in Ancaster and at Beckett School at Laurier Wilfrid University (since 2018-2019). She brings friendliness, warmth and experience to voice lessons with students at any level. From beginner to advanced, she is comfortable encouraging all students to find their voices. She has adjudicated at the Guelph and Lambton County Kiwanis Music Festivals, and is a past para-professional at Eastwood Collegiate in their vocal performance program.
When she is not teaching, rehearsing or performing, Jennifer Enns Modolo enjoy spending as much time as she can with her three growing children and her husband. She currently lives in Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario. |
