Melina Meschkat (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Hamburg, Germany

The German mezzo-soprano, Melina Meschkat, began her basic musical training at the age of 5 on the violin and in many choirs. Since she was 17 she took classical singing lessons with Marlies Körner in Hamburg to prepare for the entrance exams. She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in singing / music theater from the Hochschule für Musik Saar in the singing class of Professor Ruth Ziesak; her Master of Music degree in opera from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in the class of Jörn Dopfer (October 2017-November 2019); and has since been studying privately with Peter Anton Ling in Hannover. She is the winner of the Walter-Gieseking-Wettbewerb, Mozart Preises Hamburg and Elise-Meyer Stiftung.

Melina Meschkat was already engaged in productions during her bachelor's degree. For example, she sang in the Sommer Oper Bamberg (2013/2015), in the Opernakademie Bad Orb (2014), with the Jungen Oper Rhein Main she made her debut in 2017 at the Aschaffenburg Theater and in 2019 she sang the role of Mercédès in Georges Bizet's Carmen at the Opernfestspielen Schloss Glatt. Within her training institutes, she sang the title role of Benjamin Brittens The Rape of Lucretia (HfM Saarbrücken), Hänsel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, Ruggiero in George Frideric Handel's Alcina and Frau Reich in O. Nicolai's Lustige Weiber in the HfMT Hamburg. Master-classes with Hedwig Fassbender, René Massis and a close collaboration with Gabriele May gave her the opportunity to make her debut as Küchenjunge/Zweite Elfe in Dvorák's Rusalka at the Saarländischen Staatstheater in 2016 during her bachelor's degree. In 2017 she sang the fourth noble boy there in Wagner's Tannhäuser; in 2018 the engagement for Pagen and Sklaven in Strauss' Salome followed; and in May/June 2020 she played the role of Vlasta in M. Weinberg's Die Passagierin. She has already jumped in twice at the Theater Bremen. First in 2017/2018 as Waldelfe in Rusalka and then in February 2020 as Ruggiero in Alcina. She was planned to make her debut as Romeo in V. Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi with the Oper in Starnberg in July 2020.

Melina Meschkat is also in great demand in the oratorio area. In March and April 2020 she sang the alto part of the J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) in the concert tour of the Bach Choir and Orchestra of the Netherlands, which also brought her to the Great Hall of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
