Marta Mathéu (Soprano)

Born: 1980 - Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain

The Spanish soprano, Marta Mathéu, received comprehensive training at the Tarragona Municipal Conservatory in piano, voice, and organ. She completed additional vocal studies with Ana Luisa Chova at the Joaquín Rodrigo Conservatory in Valencia. She was also taught by Isabel Penagos, Carmen Bustamante, Miguel Zanetti, Robert Expert, François Le Roux. She additionally took master-classes with such artists as the singers Montserrat Caballé, Elena Obraztsova, and Nelly Miricioiu and, in the field of Lieder, with the pianists Roger Vignoles and Wolfram Rieger. She successfully took part in various singing competitions, winning first prize at the Joventudes Musicales d’Espanya, and in international Competition Manuel Ausensi in 2007 and the audience prize at the Concurso Montserrat Caballé and, in 2008, second prize, W.A. Mozart’s Best Performer Award, Best Spanish Performer Award and Audience Award at the Concurso Internacional de Canto Francisco Viñas (Gran Teatre del Liceu).

Marta Mathéu made her operatic debut in 2008 during the Salzburg Mozart Festival as Marcellina in W.A. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Her repertoire includes other W.A. Mozart roles such as the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, and Servilia in La clemenza di Tito, which she most recently sang under Fabio Biondi at the Mozart Festival in La Coruña, as well as roles in operas by Xavier Montsalvatge (Berta in Babel 46), Leoš Janáček (Die Richterin in Jenůfa), and Richard Wagner (Woglinde in Das Rheingold; a Norn and Gutrune in Götterdämmerung), Puccini, and Rossini. She has sung in some of the most outstanding venues in the world, including the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Teatro Real, the Liceu de Barcelona and the Philharmonie de Paris; with distinguished conductors as well as in chamber groups and with well-known colleagues. She has a wide repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music. In December 2015, she appeared at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as part of a memorial performance for Pablo Casals in his nativity play El Pessebre, which was directed by Josep Pons. She is especially devoted to the Baroque repertoire, which she performs with such conductors as Jordi Savall, Sir Neville Marriner, Michel Corboz, Fabio Biondi, and Ivor Bolton; in addition she has worked with Eiji Oue, Antoni Ros-Marbà, and Victor Pablo Pérez.

Gifted with a deep sense of musicality and an unquestionable mastery of its instrument, Marta Mathéu is now collecting the fruits of a solid career. Her J.S. Bach’s performances under the direction of Jordi Savall in different European settings (including the Philharmonie in Paris) have been praised.

As a performer of Spanish music, Marta Mathéu has received prizes for the recent recording of Martínez Vall’s Cançó d’amor i de guerra (2017) on the leading role (Francina), the first complete recording since Montserrat Caballé starred her one with Josep Carreras in 1964. In addition, she performs Lieder with pianists such as Albert Guinovart, who accompanied Victoria de Los Angeles in his recitals. In the symphonic field and the oratory, she has interpreted, among many other scores, L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with Victor Pablo Pérez.

In 2011, the City Council of Tarragona awarded Marta Mathéu the Diploma in Cultural Merit for her international career and the role of ambassador of her hometown. She currently is a member of the Senate of Tarragona.

Marta Mathéu has recorded for Klassicat, Alia Vox, KLASSIC, Brilliant, Naxos and Opus ArtE and has been a teacher of Singing in the Liceu Conservatory since 2014.

Marta Mathéu is also an acclaimed voice teacher. Among her pupils and/or singers who have attended her master-classes: Anaïs Oliveras (Soprano).
