Nathaniel Malkow (Bass)

Born: November 17, 1996 - Beloit, Wisconsin, USA

The American bass, Nathaniel (Nate) Malkow, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Opera and Certificate in Music Leadership from the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, New York (2015-2021). He has had a number of successes there in contemporary american opera - in November 2018 he sang a lead role in Ricky Ian Gordon’s The Tibetan Book of the Dead, and in February 2020 made his professional debut singing the role of Donald Gallup in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s concert production of The Mother of us All. Equally at home in the song recital genre, he was a young artist in the summer of 2019 at Songfest, America’s premiere art song training program. There he worked with contemporary american composers John Musto and John Harbison, and coached with Margo Garrett, Lydia Brown, and Alan Louis Smith. Currently he studies for his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at Louisiana State University (since August 2021; expected graduation: 2023). He was Emerging Artist at Seagle Festival (May-August 2022).

Nathaniel Malkow has an unique instrumental background - he trained as a clarinetist for 8 years and participated in Wisconsin All-State ensembles before becoming a singer. This multifaceted grounding in instrumental and vocal music has led him to explore other interests in arts entrepreneurship and career styles. In the field of arts administration, he has been active at Eastman School of Music as Ensemble Manager (September 2015-May 2016), Circulation Attendant at Sibley Music Library (August 2019-August 2021), and Assistant to the Director of the Institute for Music Leadership (January-August 2021); at Midsummer's Music Ltd. in Sister Bay, Wisconsin as Administrative Intern (May-September 2020) and Social Media Manager (May-September 2021); at Luisiana State University as Concert Office Associate (August 2021-May 2022) and Social Media Manager (since August 2021).

Nathaniel Malkow is curreently based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he active as a freelance opera singer (since August 2017) and as Associate Voice Teacher at Phyllis & Friends (since January 2023). He has a soft spot for the clarinet quintets of Johannes Brahms and W.A. Mozart and his favorite spot in door county is Ellison Bluff County Park.
