Ariadne Lih (Soprano)

Born: Montréal, Québec, Canada

The Canadian soprano, writer and translator, Ariadne Lih, obtained her Bachelor's degree in Music Summa cum laude from Yale University (2013-2017), where she studied voice with Dann Coakwell; her Master of Music degree in Opera and Voice from Schulich School of Music of McGill University (2019-2021); and her Master's degree in Translation from Concordia University (since 2021; expected graduation: 2024).

Ariadne Lih is a queer feminist soprano who sings opera, oratorio, and chamber music from the earliest notations to the present day. She appears as a soloist with ensembles in Québec and the USA, focusing on the works of women composers past and present. Critics have praised her “clarion, pure and lovely voice” (Madison Isthmus) and an “unusual ease” in her mastery of Baroque style (Revue L’Opéra). Previous roles include Aldimira in Cavalli’s Erismena and Romilda in Cavalli’s Xerse, both with the Yale Baroque Opera Project, and Phani in Les Indes Galantes at Amherst Early Music. She has appeared as a soloist with the Texas Early Music Project in their production of La Pellegrina as well as in New Haven with the Elm City Consort, and was featured by the Yale Music Department in a concert of Philip de Vitry motets. She is a seasoned ensemble musician; highlights include J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245 under Masaaki Suzuki and George Frideric Handel's Judas Maccabeus under David Hill, both with the Yale Schola Cantorum. She was also manager, section leader and soloist for the Yale Collegium Musicum, a group she loved for its ability to introduce young musicians to early repertoire. A rising senior at Yale College, she was involved with a number of student-run ensembles, especially the Opera Theater of Yale College; in 2015-2016, she sang Aloès in Chabrier’s L’Étoile and Miss Pinkerton in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Ariadne Lih was recently featured on Infusion Baroque’s Virtuosa CD and composer Alice Ping Yee Ho’s solo album "A Woman’s Voice", now streaming on all platforms. She can also be heard online alongside Suzie LeBlanc and Lucas Harris as part of the Cozzolani Reunited project, and as part of a soprano-humpback whale duet with The Uncommon Music Festival - an Alaskan chamber music festival that she co-founded and co-directs.

Ariadne Lih also maintains an active career as a writer and translator since 2015. She has also worked as Communications Assistant at Schulich School of Music of McGill University (September 2019-May 2020); French to English Translator at Alliance du personnel professionnel et technique de la santé et des services sociaux (APTS) (July 2021-April 2022); Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator at Schulich School of Music of McGill University (March-December 2022). She currently lives in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
