Wilhelm Hartmann (Bass)

Born: Germany

The German bass, Wilhelm Hartmann, finished his studies at the Musikhochschule Köln with artistic maturity examination as a singer. In 1991 he was 1st prize winner at the singing competition of the Musikhochschule Köln. In 1993 he won the competition of the music schools in North-Rhine/Westphalia. In 1994 he won the "Afexandi Girardi" competition for opera & operetta. The same year he became winner of the international singing competition for Wagner singing in Strasbourg.

In 1991 Wilhelm Hartmann was engaged at the Opernstudio der Oper Köln, and from 1993 to 1996 he was a member of the Solistenensemble. Since 1996 he is engaged at the Niedersächsischen Staatsoper. Apart from broadcast and television programmes with conductors such as Giuseppe Sinopoli, Marek Janowski, Christian Thielemann and Gabor Ötwös, he has appeared as a guest at the opera houses of Bonn, Leipzig and Dessau, at the Bayerische Staatsoper, in Rome and at the festival of Orange. In May 1998 he gave his debut at the Royal Opera Covent Garden in London as Da-ud in the opera Die ägyptische Helena by R. Strauss under the baton of Christian Thielemann.
