Julian Hartman (Bass-Baritone)

Born: Hilversum, the Nertherlands

The Dutch bass-baritone, Julian Hartman, graduated with a theater degree from the ‘Hogeschool voor de Kunsten’ in Baarn, the Netherlands followed by studies vocal technique with Joy Workum, Sir Donald McIntyre, Stephen Sweetland, Aafje Heynis, David Wilson-Johnson and Peter Harrison.

Julian Hartman feels at home on the Opera and Concertstage. He was first engaged at the Luzerner Theater (Switzerland) where he was chosen by Marcello Viotti to be in the ensemble singing roles including Dulcamara, Papageno, Schaunard and with big succes Leporello. Both in Lucerne as in Theater Freiburg (Germany) he sang Bottom in A midsummernight’s dream. He continues his work on the opera stage most regularly in the Netherlands with the Netherlands Opera (Amsterdam), the Nationale Reisopera (Enschede), Opera Zuid (Maastricht) and the Vlaamse Opera (Antwerp, Belgium); Opernhaus Köln (Germany) in Glückliche Hand, Un ballo in Maschera, Charles Gounod's Faust, W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Madama Butterfly, Parsifal, Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd, Alban Berg's Lulu, Don Carlos, l’Anima del filosofo etc. Engagements included Buonafède in Il mondo della luna with the Nedrlands Radio Kamer Orkest and Adam Fischer in concert hall Vredenburg, Utrecht, Holland for TROS Radio. Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana for Opera Zuid (David Parry/Christopher Alden). Schlemil/Hermann in Les contes d’Hoffmann (Jean-Claude Casadesus/David McVicar) and Yamadori in Madama Butterfly (Silvio Varviso/Robert Carsen) 2. Gralsritter in Parsifal (Stephan Soltesz/Fred Berndt) for the Vlaamse Opera and broadcasted by BRT-television. Moralès in Carmen for Opera Zuid (David Jones/Calixto Bieito). Idreno in Armida on the Haydnfestspiele, Eisenstadt, Austria (Adam Fischer/Michael Shilhan) broadcasted by ORF-television.

Amongst various radio- internet- and televisionrecordings Julian Hartman recorded for CD Villotto in La vera costanza and Melibeo in La fedeltà premiata by J. Haydn (2009, Brilliant Records) and the arias in several complete recordings of St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach, Messiah by George Frideric Handel and Verdi's Requiem.

Julian Hartman has been privileged to work with conductors such as Frans Brüggen, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Gabriël Chmura, Valery Gergiev, Richard Hickox, Elgar Howarth, Oliver Knussen, Bernd Kontarsky, Ton Koopman, Pieter Jan Leusink, John Nelson, David Parry, Stephan Soltesz, Ed Spanjaard, Silvio Varviso, Marcello Viotti, Jan Willem de Vriend, Edo de Waart.

His musical work has taken him to musical festivals in the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Austria and the USA. Musical highlights include live broadcastings from Holland Festivals at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in War and Peace and der Schatzgräber, both conducted by Edo de Waart. IMF Luzern in the male leading role in the world premiere of Das Lachen der Schafe as also Presto in Les mamelles de Tirésias. The leading bass, Melibeo, in La fedeltà premiata on the Haydnfestspiele, Eisenstadt, Austria as also on the festival of Besancon. Seneca in l’Incoronazione di Poppea on the Massachusetts festival of the arts. Supporting roles on the Gergiev Festival in Salomé and Manon Lescaut (Rotterdam).

Mainly in the Netherlands Julian Hartman sang in a big repertoire of oratorio. Lukas-Passion (BWV 246), Johannes-Passion (BWV 245), Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244), Magnificat (BWV 243), Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) by J.S. Bach; Matthäus-Passion by Georg Philipp Telemann; Schöpfung, die Jahreszeiten, Paukenmesse by J. Haydn; Stabat Mater by Haydn, Schubert, Rossini, Dvorak; Svata Ludmilla by Dvorak; Messiah, Samson, Judas Maccabeus, Joshua by G.F. Handel; Te Deum by Charpentier; Krönungsmesse by W.A. Mozart; Requiem by W.A. Mozart, Maurice Duruflé, Dvorak, Gabriel Fauré, Michael Haydn, Hidas, Salieri, Verdi; Messe Solenelle by Charles Gounod; Petite Messe Solenelle by Rossini; Messa di Gloria by Puccini; In terra pax by Martin; Paulus, Elias by Felix Mendelssohn; Oratorio de Noël by Camille Saint-Saëns; Enfance du Christ by Berlioz, etc.

In the recent years Julian Hartman made his debut at the Residentie Orkest Den Haag as Christ in J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) conducted by John Nelson. Followed by a concert tour as Hérodes in Berlioz’ l’Enfance du Christ with the Brabants Orkest conducted by Michael Tabachnick. He made his debut in L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 during a concert tour with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie conducted by Shunji Aratani. He made a concert tour with the Requiem of Verdi, the Ukrainian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martin Panteleev. He sang the bass-part in W.A. Mozart's Requiem with the Ukrainian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jeroen Weierink during the Tjernobyl Commemoration in Kiev (Ukraine) followed by a tour through the Netherlands . All tours ended with the final concert in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. In 2013 he sang Chasseur in the celebrated production of Guillaume Tell by Rossini (tv) (Paolo Carignani/Pierre Audi), and also as one of the players in The Player by Prokovief, both at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam.
