Rachel Deatherage (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Sacramento, USA

The American mezzo-soprano, Rachel Deatherage, studied at American River College and obtained he Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice from Sonoma State University (2012). As a buoyant performer of classical repertoire, she simultaneously quarantined and participated in Cindy Sadler’s DIY Summer Program (2020). In 2020 she took 2nd place in the Marcella Sembrich International Competition and won The Riverside Opera Company’s 2020 Competition. Subsequently, her quarantine recordings have been showcased in two of ROC’s virtual recitals (ROC's Competition Showcase in 2020 and Valentine's Concert in 2021).

Rachel Deatherage is a captivating performer with a rich, warm timbre. Lauded for her "dark" voice (San Diego Story) with its “shimmering” vibrato (Daily Republic) she gifts her audience with performances that are both vocally and dramatically compelling. At Opera NEO (2016, 2018, 2019) she brought personality and authenticity to the stage, delivering her repertoire with “irresistible vocal panache and knowing inflection” (San Diego Story). Whether portraying the “sweetly overbearing Madame Larina” in Eugene Onegin, or sharing a cabaret scene of Madame Thénardier with “saucy bravado” her dramatic commitment to each character was always evident (San Diego Story). Her 2020-2021 season included the roles of Komponist in NYOF’s Ariadne auf Naxos, Dame Carruthers in the Ridgewood Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company’s The Yeoman of the Guard (2020, cancelled), and André in Getréy’s The Village Trial with Columbia University’s NOW (2020, cancelled). Her 2021-2022 season included the roles of Bradamante in George Frideric Handel's Alcina with Chicago Summer Opera (2021), and Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri (cancelled) as well as her participation in Opernfest Prague (2021, cancelled) and the Bayrische OpernAkademie this fall.

Newly relocated to Berlin, Germany, Rachel Deatherage is currently taking German intensive language courses and auditioning in Europe.
