Cölner Barockorchester (Baroque Orchestra)

Founded: 2007 - Cologne (Köln), North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Infectious passion, dynamic virtuosity and subtle empathy characterize the playing culture of the Cölner Barockorchester (Cologne Baroque Orchestra), which was initially founded in 2007 as a young orchestra by a few graduates of the Kölner Musikhochschule under the direction of Andreas Hempel and Evelyn Buyken. The ensemble has now become an integral part of the early music scene, delighting audiences at well-known national and international festivals (Bregenzer Festspiele, Kölner Fest für Alte Musik, Festival Alte Musik Knechtsteden, Brühler Schlosskonzerte) and creating an individual reputation with innovative concert projects.

In the 2015-2016 season, the Cölner Barockorchester made its debut in the Kölner Philharmonie and produced the CD "Towards Heaven – Dem Himmel entgegen" with works by Muffat, Rosier, Telemann and Jaquet de la Guerre for Coviello Classics. With the digital and participatory education project “#in the Bubble?”, the CBO recently attracted attention and thus set an important example for new, flexible and experimental concert formats. Another big step in this direction is the multi-year concert project "Fair Play - Sauber Spielen" (Fair Play - Clean Play), which began in October 2019. Taking responsibility together for a clean and fair world is the message of these performances on the four elements and the Charter of Human Rights at special concert locations in Cologne. Many programs focus on female composers from the 18th century, and integrating them into concert life is an important motif for the orchestra. The Cölner Barockorchester's projects are supported by the city of Cologne, the Ministry of Culture of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the RheinEnergie Stiftung Kultur, the Kunststiftung NRW, the Landesmusikrat NRW and the SK Medien Stiftung.
