Maura Janton Cock (Soprano)

Born: May 1965 - Tucson, Arizona, USA

The American soprano and voice teacher, Maura Janton Cock, obtained her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Arizona in Tucson (1984-1987); and her Master of Arts degree in Vocal Performance major from Minnesota State University-Moorhead (1991-1992).

Maura Janton Cock has appeared as soloist with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, the Tucson Symphony, the Southwest Michigan Symphony, and the Northwest Indiana Symphony. She worked extensively with Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Festival Singers as both soloist and chorus member, and Helmuth Rilling of the Oregon Bach Festival. A regular performer with the Valparaiso University Symphony Orchestra, she has been soprano soloist in such works as L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Johannes BrahmsEin deutsches Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion (BWV 245), St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), and Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) (the latter two works under the direction of Helmuth Rilling on Valpo’s campus). She was a soloist and chorister with the Chicago ensemble His Majesties’ Clerkes. Recent engagements include performances with the Michigan Bach Collegium, Bach Chamber Choir and Orchestra of Rockford (Illinois), Miami Bach Society, Bach Society of Dayton (Ohio) and the Cuesta Master Chorale and Orchestra (California). In 2005, she was privileged to give the Midwest premiere of J.S. Bach's lost aria, Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn’ ihn (BWV 1127) on Valparaiso University’s campus.

Maura Janton Cock taught voice on the music faculty at Concordia College in Moorhead (August 1992-May 1995). She joined the faculty at Valparaiso University in Indiana in 1995: Lecturer in Music (August 1995-August 2020); Adjunct Professor of Music (since August 2020). She has worked with Valpo’s theatre department, providing musical direction for The Cradle Will Rock (2003-2004), Side by Side by Sondheim (2005-06), Cabaret (2009-2010) and vocal direction for Dido and Aeneas (2004-2005) and Sondheim on Sondheim (2019-2020). She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
