Mercè Bruguera Abelló (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

The Catalan mezzo-soprano, Mercè Bruguera Abelló, studied Violin Music Performance at the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (2003-2009); she sang for ten years with a renowned children’s choir in Barcelona and also had one year of singing lessons before she began her undergraduate course in Vocal performance and at Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (2014-2016). After two years she decided to audition at the Royal Academy of Music in London to continue her course and was awarded a scholarship to study there with Catherine Wyn-Rogers. She obtained there her Master of Music degree in Voice and Opera (2016-2018); and her Master of Arts degree in Voice Performance (2018-2020). She studied there also with Joseph Middleton.

A member of a semi-professional children’s choir from an early age, Mercè Bruguera Abelló is now singing around Europe in professional choirs as well as pursuing a career as a soloist. From January 2020 she has been a regular member of the choir at St George’s Hanover Square. Other UK groups with which she has been working are Armonico Consort (Director: Christopher Monks) and the Philarmonia Chorus. During 2000 she was freelancing with ensembles including Arcangelo (Director: Jonathan Cohen) and Ensemble Aisthesis, a Baroque and modern music ensemble based in Heidelberg, Germany. In her home town of Barcelona, she works with Ensemble O Vos Omnes, the Chamber Choir of the Palau de la Música and the Barcelona Cathedral Choir. Future plans include working with Jordi Savall's choir, La Capella Reial de Catalunya. She has always been devoted to J.S. Bach, and finding the project of Oxford Bach Soloists dedicated to perform all the cantatas was something which appealed to her enormously. After many years of working in professional ensembles, she was delighted to have the opportunity to be a choral scholar and frequent step-out soloist (since beginning of 2000) in repertoire which she is very keen on.

Operatically, Mercè Bruguera Abelló made her debut as Orfeo in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. Her time at the Academy has included operatic experience (Cornelia in George Frideric Handel’s Giulio Cesare a Fairy in Dvorak’s Rusalka) and in 2018 she won the Elena Gerhardt Lieder Prize as well as being a member of the prestigious Academy ‘Song Circle’ and the ‘Bach the European’ series. Recent highlights as soloist include W.A. Mozarts Requiem in Verona and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle in Barcelona.
