Douglas Anderson (Baritone)

Born: September 1952 - Oak Park, Illinois, USA

The American baritone and neurosurgeon, Douglas E. Anderson, studied Chemistry at University of Illinois at Chicago. He earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical School/Finch University of Health Sciences, graduating in 1977. He completed a residency in neurological surgery at Loyola University Medical Center. He is board certified in neurological surgery.

Douglas Anderson is an accomplished baritone singer who specializes in singing J.S. Bach and other classical music. He is a long-standing member of Grace Lutheran Church and its choir. He has been a soloist in Grace Lutheran Church: Bach Cantata Vespers since 1978 and has also been a frequent soloist with Chicago’s Music of the Baroque, Chicago (Director: Jane Glover). He has appeared with many Chicago area ensembles and has performed several times in Evanston's Bach Week Festival.

Douglas Anderson, MD, is one of the nation’s most accomplished neurosurgeons. He joined Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in 1983. For more than 30 years, he has helped establish Stritch School of Medicine’s department of neurological surgery as an internationally known center for education, research and patient care. He has been a full Professor since 2007. Dr. Anderson heads one of the most comprehensive and advanced neurosurgery departments in the nation. Loyola’s multidisciplinary neurosurgery team performs more than 1,000 cranial surgeries and collaborates on approximately 150 cranial-base operations per year, which places Loyola among the top five centers in the USA. He leads the department’s academic initiatives as well as its clinical and graduate medical education programs. Before being named chair, He was the department’s director of resident education, director of the spina bifida clinic and co-director of the Center for Skull Base Surgery. Dr. Anderson has performed more than 3,000 complex brain surgeries in adults and children for conditions including acoustic tumors, aneurysms, brain tumors, epilepsy, facial pain, Parkinson’s disease, trigeminal neuralgia and vascular malformations. Dr. Anderson is an author of more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and study abstracts presented at neurosurgical meetings. In November 2016, he was appointed chair of the department of neurological surgery of Loyola Medicine and Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

Douglas Anderson is married to Ann, who often performs as flutist at Grace Lutheran Church: Bach Cantata Vespers. They currently lives in Oak Park, Illinois and are the parents of four adult children, all of whom have studied music.
